ROZHOVOR

Nemrzí tě to?

Mám hodně rád "Request Line", "Stolen Desire", "From Creation" a "Life Goes On".

Spirit

Digital hrál v Crossu relativně nedávno. Říkal ti o něm něco?

Hodně si to užil.

Nejvíc mě zaujal Detroit a první generace téhle vlny společně s některými evropskými jmény jako Maurizio, Orlando Voorn, Black Dog/Plaid a Kirk Degiorgio.

English version

Who or what brought you in D´n´B?

It was just a progression really, from the London warehouse scene of the late 80´s, the acid house takeover and then that UK influence that started to bring in the sub basslines then on to breakbeats in the very early 90´s. I was a local DJ back in those days but also a clubber so I followed it through and found my home in D´n´B.

Spirit

You’ve been in the game since the day one, you´ve released various timeless tunes, you´ve released on almost all big labels, but it seems, you are bit under the radar. Don´t you regret it a bit?

Times change, trends change, sound changes but things also go around in circles. You could say I’m a bit under the radar at the moment but I’ve had quite a busy year overall. There have been times when I’ve been more popular or in the forefront such as the beginning of the millenium or the mid 2000’s when I was releasing on the likes of Shogun Audio, Metalheadz, Violence and lots of other labels over a short period of time. Things seem more label and sound focused these days though. Every thing on certain labels is perceived as good but is it really, or have people´s own musical identities and tastes been corroded by social media, label focused nights and lack of variety? It also depends where you are. Right now it seems things are opening up again musically but people in a neuro stronghold are very unlikely to experience it.

You recently took a break from producing, why?

It wasn’t intentional at all. I was living in the U.S. for nearly 6 years and then moved back to the UK. And for the last 7-8 months of living there we did a lot of moving around, with the studio packed up for all that time. When we arrived back in the UK there was a lot to sort out which didn´t leave much time for working on music. It all took some time for everything to fall back into place. To be honest, it didn’t actually feel like a long break because there was so much else happening that it was a very busy time.

What do you think about recent wave of so called neurofunk, do you like it?

In general I´m not really a fan. l think it´s the same case with any form/division of music where I´ll like some tracks but in general I feel this wave lacks feeling and organics. It´s very cold and seems to be far more focused on technique rather than vibe. To me personally that’ s the wrong way to approach something like music. Sure you can add in some more complex techniques but it should be more about emotion and soul than filters and side-chain compression.

I guess it´s a rare occasion to play 3 hours set. How it´s going to differ from normal set?

I´m looking forward to it. It´s been a while since i got to play a really long set, Even in an hour I try to take it on a journey. I´ve always thought one hour is way too short. I´ve finished the set thinking how I didn´t get to play this track or that track, not because I didn´t like them enough. Some have been brand new from myself that I would have liked to test out but they just didn´t fit at the time in the context of that particular set. I´m not going to interrupt a flow just to play one track however much I like it. In three hours I´ll be able to take the journey in a few further directions.

Spirit
Do you prepare your sets, or you prefer to improvise?

I usually know the first two or three tracks but that can change. If someone is really hammering it out before me non-stop then I have to think if they’re going to work following on from that.

Which of your tracks do you prize the most?

That’s a tough one... Obviously the ones that have ended up being most prominent and useful have a special place such as "Redial", "Siren", "Final Chapter", "Phantom Force" but there are others that are more personal to me that I like more. Honestly, 20 years later and I feel I´m making some of the best music I´ve ever done. I really like tracks like "Request Line", "Stolen Desire", "From Creation" and "Life Goes On". I´d certainly rank those last two in my most prized tracks ever. There are plenty I don´t care for any more though as well!

You are a long time production partner with Digital, how did you two meet?

I worked at Red Eye Records in Ipswich from 1992 to 1997 and Digital would come into the shop and buy records. We´d also see each other out at various raves and clubs in the area so we just ended up talking more, especially as both of us started producing at similar times.

Production-wise does it make any difference between working on your own and sharing a studio with Digital?

Definitely. Our influences come into the sound and we have our different ways of working in some aspects. One of us may try something that we wouldn´t have thought of otherwise, whether it’s choosing a sound that He or I might not think will fit or changing a bassline etc. I think there´s definitely a difference between a Digital & Spirit track and a Digital or Spirit track.

Spirit

Did you hear something about Cross club from Digital?

He enjoyed it and I´ve had lots of other people tell me it´s a great club so I´m really looking forward to it!

What music do you listen to when you want to rest form D´n´B?

No particular style. Sometimes if I’ve been working in the studio the last thing I want to do is listen to any much at all!

I guess you like techno, what are your favorite techno producers/labels?

I have to admit I haven´t really followed it that intensely for a while. I started to drift away from it when it became really dancefloor-heavy and filled with DJ tracks back in the early 2000´s. I was still more interested in what was coming out from Detroit and those first few generations are still probably my favourites along with some of the Europeans from that era like Maurizio, Orlando Voorn, Black Dog/Plaid, Kirk Degiorgio...

What are your other influences?

All kinds. Going back to the new neurofunk sound, that´s something that seems to be heavily influenced by D´n´B, from that Virus and Bad Co sound where as I´m from a generation where D´n´b once didn´t exist, whether it’s house, techno, funk, jazz, dub...

What´s in your iPod right now?

Actually there´s a lot of D´n´B at the moment. Some good new tracks that I´ve been sent and listening to!
